Overview

Affirm has partnered with Adyen, a leading global payment processor, to empower merchants with flexible pay-over-time options and robust payment processing capabilities. This partnership supports a variety of integration methods including Web Drop-in, Components, API-only, and in-store options to meet diverse merchant needs across eCommerce and in-store channels.

Adyen's e-commerce integration options consist of the following:

  • API-only
  • Web Drop-in
  • Web Components

Adyen's in-store integration options consist of the following:

  • In-Store (POS)
  • Pay-by-Link

Who to work with

  • If you are already an Adyen merchant, work with your Adyen Account Manager to enable Affirm.
  • If you are not yet using Adyen, contact Adyen directly to begin onboarding.

The Customer Experience

Customers can choose to use Affirm for their payments when shopping on a merchant site. Here is a walkthrough of the customer flow:

Initiate Checkout Image
  1. When making a purchase, the customer selects Affirm as their payment method.
  2. This triggers an Affirm pop-up explaining their payment options and benefits.
  3. Customers can quickly get started by entering their phone number. A PIN is then sent via text message to either log into an existing Affirm account or create a new one.
Loan Confirmation Image
  1. The customer will be redirected to the Affirm checkout flow in order to finalize their purchase.
  2. They can choose from various payment plans to find the most suitable one.
  3. The customer reviews the lending disclosures to ensure transparency. Once they are satisfied, they can finalize the purchase.

The Merchant Experience

  1. Implement Affirm.js SDK – Enables promotional messaging and payment method availability.
  2. Checkout – Customer selects products and chooses Affirm during checkout.
  3. Confirmation – Adyen confirms the transaction.
  4. Authorization – Adyen’s API authorizes the payment.
  5. Capture – Capture the payment within the authorization period to initiate Affirm’s repayment schedule.

Payment and risk ownership

  • Who Affirm pays: Affirm pays Adyen and Adyen disburses to the merchant.
  • Who owns repayment & fraud risk: Affirm assumes responsibility for consumer repayment and fraud risk.
