## Overview

Transactions represent the Affirm loans that are issued to the end-user. You can use the <Anchor label="Transactions API" target="_blank" href="https://docs.affirm.com/developers/reference/transaction-api-endpoints">Transactions API</Anchor> to change the state of a transaction, update metadata, or retrieve details.

## Transactions Authorization

[Transactions authorization](https://docs.affirm.com/developers/docs/manage-transactions) occurs after a user has successfully completed the Affirm checkout flow and returns back to the merchant site. Authorizing the transaction generates a unique `id` that you can use to reference the loan moving forward.

## Actions

You can integrate various transactions into your back-end order management system, where you fulfill orders and process payments, refunds, and cancelations.

You can use the `Transactions API` to manage transactions with the following actions:

* [Read Transaction](https://docs.affirm.com/developers/docs/read-void-refund-and-update-transactions#read)
* [Capture Transaction](https://docs.affirm.com/developers/docs/manage-transactions#capture-a-transaction)
* [Void Transaction](https://docs.affirm.com/developers/docs/read-void-refund-and-update-transactions#void)
* [Refund Transaction](https://docs.affirm.com/developers/docs/read-void-refund-and-update-transactions#refund)
* [Update Transaction](https://docs.affirm.com/developers/docs/read-void-refund-and-update-transactions#update)

These actions enable you to manage transactions across various [states](https://docs.affirm.com/payments/docs/transaction-states).
